-
Length:
3 Days
Times:
9 a.m.–4 p.m. (Central Time)
Format:
Online–Synchronous
Instructor: Emily Groepper

This institute will give teachers greater insight into how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to improve language learning within their educational context. Participants will first explore the brave new world of AI, considering what it does well and what it does not. They will also discuss ways to keep students and their data safe while working with AI. Participants will then learn how to effectively use AI to make lesson planning easier and activity design more engaging. During the institute, participants will have plenty of hands-on opportunities to create lesson plans and activities to use right away in their classrooms.

Target Audience:

This institute is designed for world language educators at the middle through postsecondary levels and language teacher educators. The institute is not appropriate for teachers of young children or for teachers of ASL.

She has taught German at both the high school and college level, and her current research projects focus on AI chatbot development and use in the first-year language classroom.

The "Empowering Language Teachers to Leverage AI for Student Success" summer institute, offered by CARLA, is a fantastic opportunity for language educators at the K-12 and collegiate levels to demystify AI in language teaching and learning. Participants gain insights into how AI works, its current applications, potential, and the threats it poses to language teaching and learning. Participants explore a wide range of AI tools, draft their classroom AI policy, and develop classroom materials using AI. The institute considers both the teacher's and student's perspectives on AI. I highly recommend this transformative institute for AI newcomers or instructors looking to elevate their AI expertise.–Julia Feldhaus, 2025 institute participant
