Language Teacher Education

One of CARLA's main priorities has been to support practice and research in language teacher education, at all instructional and institutional levels and contexts.

Initiative Overview

CARLA supports language teacher educators through a biennial International Language Teacher Education Conference, publications of selected conference papers, and a range of instructional materials and teaching tools for language teacher educators to use with their inservice, preservice, and graduate student teachers.

International Language Teacher Education Conference

The biennial conference was created to bring together research, theory, and best practices from all contexts of language teacher education including ESL/EFL, foreign/modern/world languages, bilingual, immersion, indigenous and minority languages, and less commonly taught languages.

CARLA offers a wide range of instructional materials and teaching tools for language teacher educators to use with their inservice, preservice, and graduate student teachers.

Content-Based Language Teaching with Technology (CoBaLTT)

CoBaLTT provides professional development resources to guide foreign language and immersion teachers in creating content-based lessons and units for their teaching context.

Learner Language: Tools for Teachers

The Learner Language initiative website offers learning modules, videos, and activities designed to help teachers hone their skills in analyzing students' learner language and creating materials to support its development.

Virtual Assessment Center (VAC)

The Virtual Assessment Center (VAC) provides teachers with step-by-step guidance and many practical resources for developing proficiency-based second language assessments, including 50 teacher-created Integrated Performance Assessment units that are ready to use in the classroom.
