Secondary Dual Language Immersion

The focus of this initiative is on developing a repository of content-and-language integrated teaching materials; conducting design-based research on these materials; and offering professional development for dual language immersion educators on the use of these materials.

Initiative Overview

This initiative seeks to help dual language immersion (DLI) teachers implement content-and-language integrated curriculum and instruction in the classroom. The initiative will include the creation of three Spanish curricular units for use in secondary DLI classrooms; design-based research on the creation and use of these materials; and professional development through workshops and a CARLA summer institute that focuses on secondary immersion continuation programs.

Upcoming Related Events

This practical presentation will provide an overview of three secondary Spanish dual language immersion curricular units available for educators as a component of CARLA’s Secondary Dual Language Immersion Initiative.

During this three-day institute specifically designed for the secondary (middle and high school) dual language immersion context, participants will explore the what, how, and why of content and language integration in secondary continuation programs.

This institute is designed for educators new-to-DLI, instructional coaches and administrators in K-12 Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs, including one-way, two-way, indigenous, and developmental bilingual schools.
