Seals of Biliteracy: Establishing and Expanding Programs in Schools or Districts

This institute provides secondary educators and administrators with tools to support the establishment and/or expansion of Bilingual Seals programs equitably and locally. Participants will grow their expertise in how to promote and recruit students to the program; how to select and administer appropriate assessments; and how to award and recognize seal accomplishments.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage in tool development and to create materials they can use for seal promotion and administration right away. The institute will provide opportunities for participants to develop world language curricular analysis and advocacy skills to support great access and equity in their state’s Seal Award.

Target Audience: This institute is designed for secondary language teachers and/or administrators who are interested in establishing or expanding a Seal of Biliteracy program in their school or district.

Instructors
Andrew Fiegen is a Ph.D. Student in the Multilingual Education program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota.
Kendall A. King is a Professor of Multilingual Education at the University of Minnesota, where she teaches and conducts research on language policy, sociolinguistics and child bilingualism and second language learning.
Ayumi Stockman is the World Languages Education Specialist at the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE).
