Stipends and Scholarships

U of MN Teachers of Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL) Scholarship Program


Application Deadline: March 30, 2018

CARLA offers LCTL instructors who currently teach at the University of Minnesota a special scholarship to attend one of the CARLA summer institutes. Teachers will be required to pay a non-refundable $25 commitment fee, but the balance of the institute cost will be paid by CARLA–a value of $325!

Program Information:

  • A limited number of scholarships will be awarded to current U of MN LCTL faculty and staff on a first-come, first-served basis until Friday, March 30, 2018.
  • Each LCTL teacher may apply for only one scholarship per year and only current University of Minnesota instructors may apply. Note: A LCTL is any language except English, French, German, and Spanish.
  • LCTL teachers who have affiliated status with the University through the College in the Schools program who teach at the high school level should apply to the CARLA/MDE Minnesota Teacher Professional Development Scholarship Program for K-12 teachers. See information below.

To apply for a CARLA summer institute LCTL scholarship:

  1. Fill out the U of MN the LCTL Teacher Scholarship Request Form. You will need to sign in using your U of MN user ID.
  2. CARLA will review your request. If you meet the selection criteria, CARLA will send you a registration code to activate your scholarship within 10 business days of submission.
  3. Register online for the institute using the special code. You will be required to pay a non-refundable $25 commitment fee at the time of registration.

7th Annual CARLA/MDE Minnesota Teacher Professional Development Scholarship Program


Application Deadline: March 30, 2018


The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) are again collaborating to offer a scholarship for free attendance to a CARLA summer institute to a selected group of K-12 Minnesota language teachers.

Program Information:

  • K-12 world language and ESL teachers who are currently teaching in Minnesota are eligible to apply. (Please note that not all CARLA summer institutes are appropriate for ESL teachers.)
  • Applicants must propose a follow up activity based on the content of the summer institute. It can be either an outreach activity (e.g. presentation to colleagues at school/district/conference) or a classroom-based project (e.g. create new lesson/unit to use with students).
  • Awardees will be required to submit a short reflection form detailing the results of their completed scholarship activity.
  • All follow-up activities must be completed by December 14, 2018 to be eligible for the $100 payment as described below.

Note: Applications are evaluated based on the stated need, the quality of the proposed follow-up activity, and the thoroughness of the submission.

Financial Information:

  • Teachers who are selected to participate will be obligated to pay a $50 non-refundable commitment fee--the rest of the registration cost will be waived.
  • Teachers who attend the institute, complete their proposed project/outreach event, and submit a short reflection form by December 14, 2018 will be eligible for a payment of $100. This amount will cover the cost of the $50 commitment fee and other miscellaneous costs associated with attending the institute (e.g. parking). Sorry, we are not able to pay for costs of travel/accommodations.

  • Application deadline is March 30, 2018.
  • Teachers will be notified by April 13, 2018 whether they have been selected to receive a full scholarship to attend a CARLA summer institute.

Educator Stipend for African Less Commonly Taught Languages

Application Deadline: April 1, 2018 (Stipends will be awarded in a rolling basis starting January 15, 2018 until all funding has been used)

The African Studies Initiative at the Institute for Global Studies and CARLA are collaborating to offer a limited number of $500-$1250 stipends for educators of African Languages (including Arabic and Portuguese) in order to attend a CARLA summer institute. Any K-14 educator who teaches an African language, including Arabic and Portuguese, is eligible to apply. Minneapolis/St Paul area educators are eligible for the $500 stipend. Educators taking an online course are eligible for the $500 stipend. Educators who travel more than 100 miles to attend a CARLA institute are eligible for the $1250 stipend. (Note: University of MN instructors are not eligible for this stipend; they may apply for the U of MN LCTL Teacher Scholarship listed above.)

Please note: You will be required to register and pay for the institute ahead of time. The awarded stipend will be processed following the conclusion of the institute. Payment is typically received within 3-4 weeks.
