Note cards for distinguishing tenses

Claire knows that she often confuses tenses.  For her, it is difficult to distinguish
a) the preterite from the conditional, and
b) the conditional from the imperfect

Claire uses note cards to practice these tenses. First she writes them out.  Here is what she writes down on the front and back of each card:

Front

  • infinitive form of a verb,
  • a personal pronoun
  • names of the tenses that are confusing.

Back

  • verb form matching the personal pronoun chosen in both preterite and conditional.

The student gets the verb forms from material received in class, her textbook, or 501 Spanish Verbs (Kendris & Kendris, 2001).

Then she uses the note cards to quiz herself on both tenses while saying the forms aloud.  Finally, she also thinks of sentences where she can use each form of the verb.
