French LAC course syllabus

Description

This is a syllabus outlining the requirements for a one-credit French CLAC course at Skidmore. The course meets once a week, and is graded S/U (Pass or Fail). Students search for and report on articles in French that treat material for a full course (taught in English). While they meet as a group to discuss their readings in French, the courses which their reading supplements can vary with each individual. We might have 8 students connecting their readings to up to 8 specific courses. The advantage is that they can use and improve their French and learn from one another about key issues in a variety of disciplines. The syllabus outlines (in French) the concept and general set of requirements for the students on the first page, while the second page provides administrative information in English.

Languages Across the Curriculum at Skidmore is offered at two levels for each language taught in the WLL Department: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. The 200-level course is a one-credit S/U (Pass-Fail) course in which students choose an area of research for the semester and select their own reading materials. The 300-level course is a 2-credit course and is handled differently in each language section. This syllabus is for the 200-level French LAC. The LAC course is required for the major in International Affairs and attracts students from a variety of other disciplines, often serving as a means of continuing French for students who are not able to fit a 'regular' French course into their schedules. Proficiency levels can vary widely, from low intermediate to advanced, and expectations for task complexity are adapted to the student's level. The prerequisite for the course is completion of our equivalent of 5th semester French.
