Unit Overview:

This unit will encourage beginning Spanish students to gain confidence in reading authentic material while learning how a Latin American post secondary education institution works. Also, it gives them an opportunity to compare and contrast a Latin American university  with an American university. Students will be able to navigate through a  website developed by the country where it is located, providing in this way  insights of what is valued in that culture. The students' goal will be  to create a brochure  "folleto" about  certain aspects of a Latin American university such as, the matriculation process,  and class registration.

The reason that the Universidad de Concepción, Chile was chosen as the Latin American university and that St. Cloud State University, Minnesota was chosen to represent an American univeristy is that there is a study abroad program between them. This unit could be used as a way to familiarize students with the University of Concepción. 

Context:

Students have learned to recognize numbers from one  to  thousands, are familiar with the verb ser/estar and several irregular verbs in the present tense. They are able to use descriptors and recognize cognates.They are familiar with months,  seasons,days of the week,  prepositions of location, conjunctions, and question words.This lesson will fit on the topic of class schedules and selection of majors at a post secondary institution
