Exercise 8: Pre- and Post-Request Expressions

 

Let’s wrap up pre-/post-request strategies.

1. Getting attention

 

すみません                            sumimasen ‘excuse me’

            あの(う)                            ano(u) ‘um/excuse me’

            失礼します                            shiturei shimasu ‘excuse me’

            ・・・さん                            ...san (the name or title of the hearer) “Mr. …/Ms. …/(first name)’

あの、すみませんが            ano,sumimasenga ‘excuse me, but’

2. Minimizing the imposition

            一週間 だけで いいですから  isshuukan dakede iidesukara ‘only one week will do’

お時間の許すときでかまいませんから  ojikanno yurusu tokide kamaimasen kara ‘only when your time allows’

都合のいいときでいいから  tsugouno iitokide iikara ‘when it’s convenient for you’

ちょっとだけでいいから  chotto dakede iikara ‘for only a little bit’

 

3. Getting a precommitment

           

            実は ちょっと お願いが あるんですけど。 Jitsuwa chotto onegaiga arun desu kedo ‘Actually I have a small favor’

           

            あの、質問があるんですが。Ano shitsumon ga arundesuga. ‘Excuse me, I have a question for you.’

 

あの、ちょっとお願いしたいことがありまして。Ano, chotto onegai shitai kotoga arimashite.

‘Excuse me, I have a small favor I’d like to ask of you.’  ちょっとお聞きしたいことがあるんですが。

Chotto okiki shitai kotoga arun desuga. ‘I have something I’d like to ask you.’

 

ちょっと頼みがあるんだけど。 Chotto tanomiga arun dakedo. ‘I have a favor to ask of you.’

 

それと、お願いがあるんだけど。Soreto, onegaiga arun dakedo. ‘And, I have a favor.’

4. Showing consideration for the hearer

            ご迷惑で なければ  gomeiwakude nakereba ‘if it’s not too much trouble’

            お手元にあれば  otemotoni areba ‘if you have it at hand’

            お手数でなければ   otesuude nakereba ‘if it’s not too much trouble’

            もし時間あったら   moshi jikan attara ‘if there is time’

5. Offering a reason for the request

            もう出版されてないみたいで  mou shuppan sarete nai mitaide ‘it seems out of print’       

 

先生はこの分野がご専門とお聞きしましたので。Senseiwa kono bunyaga gosenmonto okiki shimashita node.

‘I heard you are an expert in this field.’

 

先週体の調子を崩しまして senshuu karadano choushiwo kuzushi mashite  ‘I was sick last week’

 

急用ができてしまいまして kyuuyouga dekite shimai mashite ‘something urgent came up’

 

何件か本屋をまわって探したんだけどどうしてもみつからなくって。Nangenka honyawo mawatte sagashitanda kedo doushitemo mitsukara nakutte.  ‘I went to several bookstores looking for the book, but I couldn’t find it.’   

 

もう五時だから銀行が閉っちゃって。Mou goji dakara ginkouga shimacchatte. ‘Since it’s five, the bank is closed.’

6. Reinforcement of the request

なんとか お願い できませんでしょうか。Nantoka onegai deki masen deshouka. ‘Could I please ask you [to fulfill the request] somehow?’

 

何とかお手数ですがよろしくお願いします。Nantoka, otesuu desuga, yoroshiku onegai shimasu. ‘I realize that it’s trouble for you, but thank you.’

 

そこをなんとかお願いしますよ。Sokowo nantoka onegai shimasuyo. ‘I know [it’s hard] but please, I’m asking you.’

 

そんなこと言わないで、お願い!  Sonnakoto iwanaide, onegai! ‘Don’t say that, please.’

7. Offering reward or compensation

 

僕にできることがあればなんでもおっしゃってください。Bokuni dekiru kotoga areba nandemo osshatte kudasai. ‘If there is anything I can do, please do tell me whatever that is.’

           

            今度、試験終わったらなんでもするから。Kondo shaken owattara nandemo surukara. ‘I’ll do whatever you tell me when exams are over.’

           

            今度 お昼 おごるからkondo ohiru ogorukara ‘I’ll buy you lunch next time’

8. Expressing apologies

           

申し訳ありません、お忙しいのに。Moushiwake arimasen, oisogashii noni. ‘I’m sorry (to request something of you) when you are busy.’

           

            すみません、お手数かけます。Sumimasen, otesuu kakemasu. ‘I’m sorry I’m troubling you.’

           

            申し訳ありません。お世話になります。Moushiwake arimasen. Osewani narimasu. ‘I’m sorry. You are really doing me a favor.’

           

            ほんとにいつも悪いね。Hontoni itsumo waruine. ‘I feel bad (since you help like this) all the time.’

 

ごめんね、 忙しいのに。 Gomenne, isogashi noni. ‘Sorry (to bother you) since you are busy.’

           

            悪いね、忙しいのに。Waruine, isogashii noni. ‘I feel bad since you are busy.’

9. Expressing gratitude

            ありがとう ございます、 助かり ます。Arigatou gozaimasu, tasukarimasu ‘Thank you, that will be helpful.’

 

本当に助かります。Hontouni tasukari masu. ‘That will help me a lot.’

 

またお世話になります。ありがとうございます。Mata osewani narimasu. Arigatou gozaimasu. ‘You are doing me a favor again. Thank you.’

 

ありがとう、ほんとに。Arigatoun, hontouni. ‘Thank you, really.’

 

助かる! ありがとう。Tasukaru! Arigatou. ‘What a help! Thanks.’

 

サンキュー。ほんとに助かったよ。Sankyuu. Hontoni tasukattayo. ‘Thanks, that really saved my life.’
