Exercise 5: Refusals

 

 

Situation 1: Dialogue 2

 

The parts in red are the core refusal expressions.  The parts in blue are other important supporting strategies.

 

 

上司:あ、高木さん、  A, Takagi-san.  ‘Takagi-san,’

 

従業員はい。  Hai.  ‘Yes?’

 

上司:あの再来週、社内忘年会をやるんだけどよかったら来れないかな?  Ano saraishuu, shanai bounenkaiwo yarundakedo yokattara korenaikana?  ‘We are going to hold an in-house end-of-year party the week after next.  Can you come?’

 

従業員えー、再来週ですか?あの、ちょっと大学のサークルに入ってまして、
そのサークルの忘年会も同じ日なんですよ、申し訳ないんですけど。
 

E, saraishuu desuka?  Ano, chotto daigakuno saakuruni haitte imashite,  sono saakuruno bounenkaimo onaji hi handesuyo, moushiwake naindesukedo.  ‘Oh, in two weeks?  Well, I belong to a club at the university and I have another end-of-year party at the club on the same day, I’m afraid.’

 

上司:ああ、そうなんだ。まあね、結構沢たくさん来るんで、
まあみんなと知り合ういい機会になると思ったんだけどね。
  Aa, sou nanda.  Maane, kekkou takusan kurunde, maa minnato shiruau ii kikaini naruto omottan dakedone.  ‘Oh, I see.  Well, there’ll be a lot of us, and I thought it’d be a good chance for you to meet everyone.’

 

従業員ああ、だいぶ前に約束しちゃったもんで、すみません。  Aa, daibu maeni yakusoku shichattamonde, sumimasen.  ‘Well, I’m sorry but I made the (other)
commitment quite some time ago.’ [Strategy of apologizing/stating regret]

 

上司:あ、そっか。じゃあ、今回仕方がないね。 A, sokka.  Jaa, konkai shikataga naine.  ‘Okay.  That’s that, then.’

 

従業員:はい、すみません、どうも。  Hai, sumimasen, doumo.  ‘No, I’m really sorry.’  [Strategy of apologizing/stating regret]

 

上司:うん、それじゃあ。  Un, sorejaa.  ‘That’s okay.  See you.’

 

従業員はい、じゃあ失礼します。 Hai, jaa shitsurei shimasu.  ‘Good-bye.’

 

上司:はい。  Hai.  ‘Bye.’
