What can I do if TURKISH CHARACTERS are not displayed correctly?

a) For PCs:
The characters should be displayed properly if you use a Windows-based platform. In the event that some Turkish characters do not appear properly, use the [RELOAD] or [REFRESH] function on the given page. (See also BROWSER.)

b) For Apple computers:

How do I use the ON-SCREEN KEYBOARD that appears with some exercises?

To type the Turkish characters required in some answers, you can click on the appropriate key on the keyboard provided on screen. For the remaining letters, you can use either this on-screen keyboard or the keyboard of your computer. Note that all letters you will enter have to be entered in linear order. The program does not allow for editing. If you make changes in an answer you typed, this may adversely affect the feedback you receive when you click on the [CHECK MY ANSWER] button. Therefore, it is best to retype an answer from the beginning if you wish to change parts of it.

Index

This button allows you to clear all of you responses for an exercise and start the exercise from beginning. You may do these as often as you like.

Index

Does the program keep SCORE of my performance on the exercises?

No.

Is there a LIMIT ON THE NUMBER OF TRIALS for answering questions?

No, there is not limit on how many times you change your answer(s) to a question. However, remember that the [SHOW CORRECT ANSWERS] button will display all correct answers to that exercise.

Index

Why does the [CHECK MY ANSWERS] button does not give appropriate feedback?

If you click on the [CHECK MY ANSWERS] button before answering all questions of an exercise, the program will read your answers as incorrect. Therefore, use this button only when you have entered all of your answers.

TIPS FOR LEARNERS

Here you will find some information about how to best use the exercises in this program for learning Turkish.

Tips for learners

Order of Exercises

The nine exercises that make up each unit are graded. To optimize your learning, we recommend that you do the exercises within a unit in order.

Tips for learners

English Glosses

English equivalents of words or phrases can be accessed in one of two ways:
1) You move your cursor over a picture and the Turkish as well as the English terms in question will appear in the white box. 2) Clicking on an underlined Turkish word or phrase will display its English translation. Exception: Table of Contents page for each unit. You can access the English version of this page by clicking on the button marked “E.”
Tip: Although you may not know the meaning of some Turkish words or sentences, try to guess what they mean before clicking on the translation. Guessing, making hypotheses are creative and useful tools for learning vocabulary.

Tips for learners

Unlimited Chance for Practice

Remember that this program does not keep score of your performance. Therefore, use this opportunity for unlimited practice and take your time before clicking on the [SHOW CORRECT ANSWERS] button.

Goals and Teacher’s Use of Units

The main objective of each unit is to teach a select set of nouns. The exercises are meant to be assigned to students for work outside the classroom. While the majority of the exercises are interactive and provide immediate feedback to the learner, a small number will require feedback from the instructor. These are exercises 1.9, 2.8 and 2.9, which require paper-pencil writing and thus should be collected by the instructor. The instructions for the creative writing exercises (1.9 and 2.9) are intentionally kept rather general to allow for free expression. This flexible design also gives the teacher the chance to tailor these follow-up tasks to the needs of a specific class.

Tips for teachers

Topics

The exercises can be used both for teaching new vocabulary or for reviewing some familiar material. The two unit topics both are related to the larger topics of "Occupations," "Shopping" and "Food." It would be, therefore, natural to incorporate them into your teaching of these topics. The units could also serve as resources for treating topics like "Daily Life in Turkey" and "Turkish Cities."

Tips for teachers

Skills

The exercises include all four language skills, albeit with different emphasis. Effort has been made to move learners from reception of speech (i.e. reading and listening) to speech production (speaking and writing). Teachers are encouraged to use classtime for additional speaking and pronunciation practice, which receive somewht less attention in these units than listening, reading and writing.

Tips for teachers

Additional Use of these Exercises

Teachers are encouraged to exploit the pictures for additional activities. This may include describing individual pictures, creating dialogues based on pictures or comparing shopping situations across cultures.

Tips for teachers

The Words Taught

As said in the title, these units are designed to teach words. For each unit, nearly all exercises are built around a limited set of vocabulary items. Only few exercises introduce language beyond the word level.

Vocabulary for Unit 2: Pazarda

The Unit Pazarda focuses on the following 11 nouns:
Further nouns denoting goods sold on the farmer’s market used, but less sytematically taught: Exercise 2.6 asks the learner to read short sentences. Clicking on the sentences displays their partial English translation. Exercise 2.9 requires learners to write sentences.
