This strategy helps you remember that ser is required when referring to permanent characteristics of people or objects. This student is linking the notion of being sure to the notion of permanence. If the student wants to say 'the earth is round' in Spanish, she will know that the equivalent is la tierra es redonda, since she is sure that round is the inherent shape of the earth. Employing this strategy, then, would help keep her from saying *la tierra está redonda.
