Northern Andean Spanish exhibits a number of interesting pragmatic features that warrant further exploration in terms of requests. One study examined requests in Northern Andean Spanish and found a number of features exhibiting additional "politeness" as compared to other varieties of Spanish.

Play the conversation below between two speakers from Peru (one language variety included in Northern Andean Spanish). See if you can determine why their request sequence might be seen as uniquely polite when compared to what you have learned about requests in Spanish. Hint: These two speakers are close friends.

After watching this interaction, why do you think this sequence appears to be VERY polite?

What are some of the linguistic strategies they use to express politeness when requesting?
