Exercise 3: Requests


Different levels of politeness (the verb form)

1. Casual

        Plain form (casual)    それ貸して  Sore kashite.


2. Polite

        Desu/masu form     それ貸してくれますか?  Sore kashite kure masuka?

それ貸してもらえますか。  Sore kashite morae masuka?

3. Very polite

        Respect form     それ貸してくださいますか。  Sore kashite kudasai masuka?

        Humble form     それ貸していただけますか?  Sore kashite itadake masuka?


4. Even more polite

        Combinations of very polite forms        それお貸し  くださいます 

Sore okashi kudasai masuka?


                                                                                    Sore okashi itadake masuka?

In this exercise, you will be given a casual request in the plain form. Try forming request expressions with politeness markers: polite (2 above, desu/masu form), very polite (3 above,  respect form or humble form), and even more polite (4 above, combinations).  Write your answers in the boxes below.


くれる kureru, もらう morau (plain forms) (Note that moraeru is slightly more polite than kureru.)

です/ます desu/masu (polite form)

くださる kudasaru (respect form)

いただく itadaku (humble form)




            Plain form: テレビ消して。  Terebi keshite.


                                    テレビ・・・  Terebi・・・



            Desu/masu form:   消してくれますか?  Keshite kure masuka? 

            消してもらえますか?  Keshite morae masuka?

            Respect form: 消してくださいますか?  Keshite kudasai masuka?        

            Humble form: 消していただけますか?  Keshite itadake masuka?

            Combinations: お消しくださいますか?  Keshite kudasai masuka?

           お消しいただけますか?  Keshite itadake masuka?
