Development of Materials, I think all of these are important to development of all us in LCTL-I am less centrally involved. Thus have less time to devote to these issues and development, but I'd love to see my  “staff ”(full time language lecturers) were involved.

Language enhancement for Latvian =travel to Latvia. There are no other university programs in the US, and travel to the country is the only way to keep up on new textbooks, teaching standart. etc

Workshop a course work on: the target language itself

I don’t feel I have any professional-development needs that are LCTL-specific. I need time+money to visit the important sites in the ancient world-the most basic need for my teaching-and access to a strong library-essential for research.

Hard for me to answer for them-Most are now gone for the summer

Journal in Italian, on current events publicized in US of moderate-like France-American for French in order to keep up with language change, culture etc, adult level.

Most important to me: a list of the best and latest textbooks for Chinese+ Japanese, with names of the schools that use them.

More time in the day to be able to take advantage of average of the above.

The Dutch teachers (all over the world) have a conference every 3 years with sessions on new methods +materials, methodology, refresher material

New textbooks and other teaching materials

I really don’t have any background in linguistic. We teach biblical Hebrew basically for students who want to enter the seminary + Pastoral ministry. I used several grammar
trough the year. I have school at some computer material but have not figured out how to use them in our setting. We use a laptop computer. What could be used given that technology?

Between WAFLT(Wisconsin Assoc of Foreign Lang Teachers),ACL(American Classical League), the National communication for Greek and Latin, ACTFL, etc. I feel I am very well served in pedagogical matters,

I’m very interested in technology that would allow me to project sentences (exercise and Biblical texts) on to a screen for all to see, and to be able to move words around to show grammatical constructions, and to correct student-written sentences.

How to make the best of labs, which in our university are the professors’ responsibilities without assistants (if any, they are undergraduate). I am desperately in need of lab assistants but the university does not pay attention to that difficulty. I am the only one doing everything.

As chair, my top priority at the moment is seeking endowed chair on professorship (for modern Irish)

The next way to achieve proficiency in the teaching of ancient languages is to know the languages and have enthusiasm + good communicative skills.

Keeping up with journals and monographs in the field. Conducting research, including publication of newly discovered texts. Participating in meeting of scholarly societies.

I must say that the Cambridge group which conducts intensive one-week summer workshops and the American Classical League(ACL) which also meets every summer with much of great value and which maintains a TMRC (teaching materials and resource center) provide these things already. The problem is getting time to take advantage of them! By the way, I am very much worried about the situation in German and Russian. I am interested that you consider German not LCTL; it is certainly rapidly becoming a LCTL in Ohio. Russian is almost non-existent. This is outrageous.

I just need room in the curriculum to teach these languages. I will take care of the rest.

Informing top university leadership about importance of LCTLs

Means of convincing administrators that secondary languages & cultures are crucial.

The main problem is to get administrators to realize the value of LCTL’s without requiring a minimum of 25 students!

Facilitate awareness & publicity campaigns for African language courses. Gathering of monolingual reading materials from target language countries for adaptation to teaching the languages

Include Native American languages among LCTLs or build a bridge to Native American Languages

Availability of a national testing service students could turn to place out of their language requirements at their universities

The FOLA Program would not be able to fund sending out tutors to conferences & workshops etc. but e-mail information would be appreciated.

I would love to see greater regular interaction between teachers.

Design of language programs, and commitment administrative structures, sufficient to achieve competence level of S-3, R-3, and W-3 in a college curriculum, for students who elect language study.

There are already excellent Latin seminars in the country although I can’t get to most of them.

Funding for going to these workshops and conferences

A workshop or course work on using films from related countries to show in language classes. How to use films (both with & without subtitles) as language teaching tools.
