Summary
Multimedia tools were at the top of most respondents' wish lists. Many would
like multi-media teaching materials, including software, and texts and lessons
on CD-ROM (as noted in (8) above, one instructor is developing a CD-ROM text
for Yoruba). Others would like computer-based interactive lessons and exercises,
including Computer-Assisted Instruction for grammar and vocabulary drills.
A couple of respondents noted that access to a multimedia lab is still a problem
(even if they have the tools).
Instructors would also like more pedagogical materials
accessible on the Internet, particularly World Wide Web materials, presumably
because they are also interactive and multi-media. Other Internet desiderata
include discussion lists in the target language and e-mail interaction between
students and the instructor, and between students and e-mail pals in the target
language.
Instructors also would like to have greater accessibility
to more and better video materials. Some would like to gain access to more
entertainment programs in the target language/culture, like films, soap operas
and comedy programs, where there is more conversation and interaction than
in a news program. Others would like to have more prepared videotaped programs
and lessons that are in the target language and are pedagogically sound, and
some would like to have more satellite transmissions, like SCOLA, for their
language. Two respondents said they would like to have more authentic audio
recordings as well.
Another request was for more and better workbooks and
texts, especially ones that give attention to the development of learning
strategies and have a strong, culturally-based core of materials.
Four respondents stated that they do not have any problem
obtaining materials they desire: authentic materials are readily available
to them, they have enough funding (or materials are inexpensive enough) to
obtain all they need, they have access to computer labs and software.
