Instructional Strategies for Explicitly Teaching Language in Secondary Dual Language Immersion Education

Mar 1, 2025 | 10am - 1pm CST
Online via Zoom
Cost: $30

In order to support students toward high levels of bilingualism and biliteracy, secondary dual language immersion (DLI) teachers need to explicitly teach language features within their content-focused classes. In this interactive and practical workshop, participants will experience a variety of instructional strategies that can be used in any discipline - and with any language - to teach language while also engaging with content concepts. Participants will leave this workshop with a number of new tools for their instruction as well as clear first steps for implementing those strategies in their classrooms.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of explicit language instruction in content-focused secondary DLI classes;
  • Describe common underlying characteristics of language-focused instructional strategies for content-based classrooms; and
  • Incorporate explicit language instruction into their units and lessons

Instructor: Cory Mathieu is an assistant professor of multilingual education at Western Washington University. She has spent nearly a decade working with dual language teachers to build knowledge and skills for content and language integration. She is passionate about providing opportunities for secondary dual language teachers, who are often siloed and isolated, to learn and collaborate in community. Cory is the leader of CARLA's Secondary Dual Language Immersion initiative.

Target Audience: This institute is designed for DLI teachers, coaches, program coordinators, and administrators at the secondary (middle school and high school) level. However, it can be applied to teachers in other content-based language education settings, such as elementary DLI or ESL contexts.
