CARLA Workshop: Developing and Implementing Language Objectives in Secondary Dual Language Content Classes

In this interactive and practical workshop, secondary dual language educators will gain experience in writing and implementing language objectives that support students in understanding and producing academic content. Topics will include: how to determine what language to teach while teaching content like science, social studies, or language arts; how to craft focused and measurable language objectives; and how to integrate language objectives in content-focused materials and activities. Participants will leave this workshop with a rich understanding of how to integrate language instruction into their content-based instruction. 

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify specific language features to target in content-focused units or lessons;
  • Write focused and measurable language objectives; and
  • Incorporate language-focused activities into content instruction.


Instructor
Cory Mathieu is Assistant Professor of Multilingual Education at Western Washington University. She has spent nearly a decade working with dual language teachers to build knowledge and skills for content and language integration. She is passionate about providing opportunities for secondary dual language teachers to learn and collaborate in community. Cory is the leader of CARLA's Secondary Dual Language Immersion initiative.

Target Audience
This workshop is designed for DLI teachers, coaches, program coordinators, and administrators at the secondary (middle school and high school) level. However, it can be applied to teachers in other content-based language education settings, such as elementary DLI or ESL contexts.
