Online via Zoom

Note: This workshop has reached full capacity. If you wish to join the waiting list, please complete the form so we can contact you at a later date if space becomes available.

This free workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of the new Practical Program Evaluation Toolkit for Educators. The toolkit includes three sections designed to guide language educators through the process of conducting a language program evaluation: planning, gathering data and reporting. Participants will be given opportunities to use the resources and identify ways to apply them in their current language program or instructional contexts. Via scenario-based hands-on learning activities, participants will be guided through the process of designing an evaluation framework and will learn ways to implement these resources to address the needs of a given program.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how to design an evaluation based on program needs;
  • Identify existing resources for language program evaluation;
  • Recognize ways to apply the resources in local language programs; and
  • Apply specific resources to a future program evaluation plan.

Instructors
Meg Malone (Ph.D., Georgetown University) is Director of Assessment and Research at ACTFL. Her current research includes a national study of why college students do and do not study world languages in college and teachers’ understanding of language program evaluation.
Reuben Vyn (Ph.D., University of Iowa) is an Assessment Manager at ACTFL. A former high school French teacher and quality assurance advisor for a national test of French, his research has focused on the washback effect of assessments on instruction.

Target Audience
This workshop is geared toward both postsecondary world language faculty and administrators, as well as K-12 educators (including instructors, administrators and supervisors) who work in the United States and are interested in conducting a language program evaluation in their context. It is not meant for administrators who want to conduct teacher evaluations of their classroom performance.

The workshop is offered free of charge to language educators within the target audience (see above) on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited.

This workshop stems from the joint CARLA-ACTFL initiative on Practical Program Evaluation.
