Unit Overview:

The curriculum introduces convex and concave lenses and their role in microscopy, the use and care of a microscope, the preparation of a slide, as well as the observation of non-living and living specimens through a microscope. These lessons were designed to provide a language component to this particular unit, but would work well with any microscope units. This particular project includes a web-based project, which brings in the Spanish language. Students read about the history of the microscope and learn the names and functions of the microscope parts in Spanish. Students also view samples magnified under a microscope and describe them in the target langage. Finally, students read about different types of microscopes and desribe them in Spanish.

Context:

The core of this unit is the Robbinsdale Area Schools/Independent School District 281 science curriculum for microscopes. The district's unit consists of nine lessons, which last approximately one hour each.
