Unit Overview:

Students will learn the parts of a map such as compass rose, distance scale, key, and will learn the continents and oceans of the world. They will also learn the grid system of longitude and latitude emphasizing the five main latitude lines and the two main longitude lines.

Context:

Students have worked with and created maps. They have studied various uses of maps and what can be represented on maps. This beginning map unit starts the fourth grade curriculum in social studies. They will be able to use maps as they learn about the geography of the world and state.
