Unit Overview:

Being in touch with our own emotions and how to communicate them effectively with others is important to successful relationships of all types.  In a language classroom community, students need to feel comfortable with who they are in relationship to each other and how they are feeling being in this new environment, culture and language.  The ability to understand their emotions centering around their new experiences and  to communicate them effectively with others will create an environment where students feel comfortable learning and taking risks. Taking risks is a key to successful language learning.

Context:

This unit will be done at the beginning of the school year and will be used to create a healthy ESL classroom community. At the beginning of the unit, students will be able to share their knowledge of emotions and then build on them throughout the unit.  Students will aquire new vocabulary to describe and express specific emotions non-verbally, verbally and in writing.  This new vocabulary will also help them to identify and understand their fellow classmates.  They will also review expressions in the context of emotions and feelings.  This new knowledge will be presented in a hyperstudio/powerpoint presentation that these older ESL students will share with their younger/newer peers.
