four to six 50 minute class
This unit provides an introduction to the American Revolution and combines both social studies and language arts. Students learn about major figures during the revolution. Each student is assigned a different person to research. At the end of this unit students (in costume) will present information to the class about their assigned person that made a big contribution for the revolutionary war. They will participate in a "Fair" about the time period that the revolution took place. Parents and other fifth graders from the school will be invited to the fair where they can play games, see important figures in costume and learn about life during that time. All students need to visit the various booths.
In the fifth grade social studies curriculum students learn about the original 13 colonies and students will have studied about the differences between Europe and the American colonies and why these differences led to the revolutionary war. This unit occurs after they have learned all of that initial information. This unit focuses on the important figures of the American Revolution. The student's language ability is quite strong but they need practice producing more extended language and also with using past tense verbs. They also need practice reading and producing expository text (5 paragraph essay) and developing research skills.
