14-80 minute class sessions
In this unit students will learn about the political history of Puerto Rico and will explore the political options available for Puerto Ricans today. They will then debate the pros and cons of Puerto Rico becoming the fifty-first state, staying a commonwealth, and becoming an independent country. After debating the advantages and disadvantages of each governing system, students will vote as citizens of Puerto Rico in the plebiscite.
Students will be familiar with the geography of Puerto Rico. They will be familiar with famous Puerto Ricans living in the continental United States.What are you assuming that your students already know coming into this unit.
