5 weeks. Each lesson is one week, using science, reading and writing times.

Unit Overview:

This unit on Insects has three main foci:
"What is an Insect?" focuses on the specific characteristics a creature has that qualify it as an "insect". Through different activities, students use their knowledge of these characteristics to identify real insects and then to classify these insects according to additional physical characteristics.

"The Life cycle of the Butterfly" focuses on the 4 parts of the life cycle (butterfly lays eggs and caterpillars hatch, caterpillars eat and get fat, caterpillars become chrysalides, transformed caterpillars become butterflies) and the concept that this cycle of life continues. Each student will make a slide show of this life cycle as a final project.

"The Butterfly versus The Moth" focuses on the characteristics of the butterfly and those of the moth. Students can then compare and contrast these to find similarities and differences.

Context:

Students may have knowledge, in English, regarding the content of this unit. I assume this prior knowledge comes from experience in seeing and interacting with insects and from listening to books read about instects. I do not believe that students have the knowledge in French. Insects is a second grade theme which is not introduced prior to second grade nor reviewed as a unit after second grade. I believe students may have some limited French language about general vocabulary such as nouns and verbs that can be used when talking about insects and when talking about other things (ex, egg, to come out of).
