A drawing

Alex’ strategy for sorting out the difference between the preterite and imperfect consists on drawing two boxes, each one representing either the imperfect or the preterite.

He then draws a line going through one box, to represent an action that “does not have clear starts and endings.”  This is the imperfect.  In the other box, his line stays inside the borders.  This represents an action that “happened a set number of times or in a certain time period.”  This is the preterite.
