Exercise 2: Thanks

 

Scenario 1: Sample Dialogue

 

The parts in red are the thanking expressions you’ve been asked to write down.

 

A: ねえ、西田。  Nee, Nishida. ‘Hey, Jun.’

 

B:   N?  ‘Yeah?’

 

A: テスト勉強進んでる  Tesuto benkyou susunderu?  ‘How’s your test preparation going?’

 

B: うんまあなんとか。  Un maa nantoka.   ‘Well, not so bad.’

 

A: おれさあ、ぜんぜん終わってなくて。それで、お願いがあるんだけど。  Ore saa, zenzen owatte nakute.  Sorede, onegaiga arundakedo.  ‘Well, I haven’t gotten anything done, and I have a favor to ask of you.’

 

B: なに?  Nani?  ‘What is it?’

 

A: 今週のバイト、一日だけ代わってくれないかな?  Konshuuno baito, ichinichi dake kawatte kurenai kana?  ‘Could you cover for me at work for just a day this week?’

 

B: え! E!  ‘What?’

 

A: 一日だけでいいんだよ。ほんと、一日だけ。  Ichinichi dakede iindayo. Honto, ichinichi dake.  ‘Only a day would be fine.  Really, just a day.’

 

B: 何曜日?  Nanyoubi?  ‘What day of the week?’

 

A: 水曜日ぐらいかな。  Suiyoubi gurai kana?  ‘How about Wednesday, give or take a day?’

 

B: 水曜日。うーん。うん、いいよ。やったげる。  Suiyoubi. Uun. Un, iiyo. Yattageru.  ‘Wednesday. Hmm.  OK. I’ll do it for you.’

 

A: ほんと?助かった!ほんとにありがとう、西田。  Honto?  Tasukatta!  Hontoni arigatou, Nishida.  ‘Really?  You saved my life!  Thanks a lot, Jun.’

 

B: ううん、ぜんぜん。  Uun, zenzen.  ‘Not a problem.’

 

A: ほんとにありがとう。  Hontoni arigatou.  ‘Thanks a lot.’

 

B: うん。  Un.  ‘Yeah.’
