Exercise 11: Requests

Sample Dialogue 1

後輩：あ、田中先輩、こんにちは。  A, Tanaka senpai, konnichiwa.  ‘Oh, hi, Tanaka senpai.’

先輩：あ、こんにちは。  A, konnichiwa. ‘Oh, hi.’

後輩：あの、先輩、明後日の夜、バイト入ってないですよね。  (Checking on availability)  Ano, senpai, asatteno yoru, baito haitte nai desuyone.  ‘You are not scheduled to work the night after tomorrow, are you?’

先輩：明後日の夜は、うん、入ってないけど、どうして？  Asatteno yoruwa, un, haitte nai kedo, doushite?  ‘The night after tomorrow …no, I’m not scheduled, but why?’

後輩：もしよかったら (Showing consideration for the hearer)  Moshi yokattara ‘If it’s okay with you’  代わってもらえませんか？ (Making a very polite request)  kawatte morae masenka?  ‘Can you cover for me?’

先輩：あ、バイト？  A, baito?  ‘Oh, at work?’

後輩：うん。  Un.  ‘Yeah.’

先輩：え、うーん、うん、いいけど、なんで？  E, uun, un, iikedo, nande?  ‘Well, um, okay, but why?’

後輩：えーと、前からねらってた映画があるんですね。それのチケットを友達からもらったんですけど、

それが明後日で切れちゃうんですよ。(Offering reasons for the request)  , maekara neratteta eigaga arun desune.  Soreno chikettowo tomodachi kara morattan desu kedo, sorega asattede kirechaun desuyo.  ‘Um, there is a movie I have wanted to see for a long time.  A friend of mine gave me the ticket, but it’s going to expire in two days.  できれば  (Showing consideration for the hearer)  Dekireba  ‘If possible’  行ってきたいなぁと思うんですけれども。  (Offering reasons for the request)  Itte kitainaato omoun desu keredomo.  ‘I want to go.’

後輩：うん、あ、うん、そういうことだったら、ぜんぜんいいよ。うん。  Un, a, un, souiu koto dattara, zenzen iiyo.  Un.  ‘Okay, if that is the case, no problem.’

後輩：ありがとうございます。 (Expressing gratitude)  Arigatou gozaimasu.  ‘Thank you.’

先輩：はーい。  Haai.  ‘Sure.’
