Exercise 3: Reasons for Refusals

 

 

*      In Japanese, presenting a generic reason for the refusal is appropriate in most distant relationships.  However, if your interlocutor requests further information, you might need to be more specific.  

 

*      However, when speaking to someone close, regardless of whether they are of equal or different status, you might be expected to be honest and frank.  More specific information may well be appreciated and make your refusal more sincere.
