Exercise 6: Refusals

Situation 1: Refusing an Offer

The parts in red are the core refusal expressions.  The parts in blue are other important supporting strategies.

ホストのお母さん：ごはんのおかわり、いかが？Gohanno okawari, ikaga?  ‘How about more rice?’

留学生：ああ、もうおなかいっぱいいただきました。  Aa, mou onaka ippai itadaki mashita.  ‘I’ve had enough.’ 

ホストのお母さん：肉じゃがもまだいっぱいあるよ。 Nikujagamo mada ippai aruyo.  ‘We have plenty of nikujaga too.’

留学生：はい、ほんとにおいしかったです。  Hai, hontoni oishikatta desu.  ‘It was really delicious.’

ホストのお母さん：そう？あんまり遠慮しないで言ってね。  Sou?  Anmari enryo shinaide ittene.  ‘Really?  Don’t be too shy to ask.’

留学生：はい、ありがとうございます、ごちそうさまでした。  Hai, arigatou gozaimasu, gochisousama deshita.  ‘Yes, thank you.  Thank you for the meal.’
