Exercise 6: Refusals

Situation 1: Accepting an Offer

ホストのお母さん：ごはんのおかわり、いかが？  Gohanno okawari, ikaga?  ‘How about more rice?’

留学生：ああ、もう沢山いただいてます。  Aa, mou takusan itadaitemasu.  ‘Oh, I already have a lot.’

ホストのお母さん：肉じゃがもまだいっぱいあるのよ。  Nikujagamo mada ippai arunoyo.  ‘We have plenty of nikujaga too.’

留学生：ええ、ほんとにこれおいしいですね。  Ee, hontoni kore oishii desune.  ‘This is really good.’

ホストのお母さん：そう？じゃあ遠慮しないで。  Sou?  Jaa enryo shinaide.  ‘Really?  Don’t be shy to ask (for more) then.’

留学生：そうですか、じゃあもう少しいただいていいですか？  Sou desuka, jaa mou sukoshi itadaite ii desuka ?  ‘Really, then can I have just a bit more ?’

ホストのお母さん：ええ、もちろん。よかったわ、たくさん作っておいて。  Ee, mochiron.  Yokattawa, takusan tsukutte oite.  ‘Sure, of course.  I’m glad I made a lot.’

(Notice that the host mom offers three times before the student finally accepts it !)
