Preposition “a”
Some interlanguage patterns are formed when the native language and target language systems differ. For example, Spanish requires a preposition “a” whenever the direct object object of an action verb is treated as a person (this is sometimes called the “personal a”). Adding such a preposition in English is ungrammatical.
S: Quiero visitar a mi abuela.
E: *I want to visit to my grandmother.
Look at the table below, where we list all instances across all the tasks when Henry or Raul follow an action verb with a direct object that is human. Then answer the questions below the table.

Is there a pattern to Henry’s interlanguage in these constructions? If yes, what is it? What’s Raúl’s interlanguage pattern?
These are all obligatory contexts in Spanish where the 'a' was needed before the object of the verb. All but one of Raúl’s instances correctly supply 'a', while Henry leaves out the so-called “personal a” in all instances where it is obligatory. This is a clear case where Raúl’s interlanguage contains a pattern (or “rule’) that is missing in Henry’s interlanguage.
