Sentence complexity in jigsaw and comparison tasks
Read the table below listing all the complex sentences produced by the two learners in the Jigsaw and Comparison tasks. Then answer the questions below the table.

The task with lower cognitive demand produces fewer complex sentences, while the task with greater cognitive demand produces more complex sentences. For both learners, most of the complex sentences seem to be related to hedging in stating hypotheses (e.g. “creo que” (I think that) + sentence, or “parece que” (it seems like) + sentence; the Comparison task elicits more of these hedged hypotheses than the Jigsaw task.
