Unit 5: Using Pictures, Part A
Before you watch:
This unit looks at materials that do not contain language themselves (like written or spoken texts) but that stimulate language production. That language may be hard to predict. How do you feel about that unpredictability in a language classroom?
After you watch:
In this clip, Bill suggests that in language teaching, the elements of creativity and imagination are often overlooked. Why does he say this? Do you agree with Bill that this is wrong? Why, or why not?
Bill suggests towards the end of the clip that learner tasks can, broadly speaking, involve either description of what is actually seen in the picture, or speculation about aspects of the same picture. Are different linguistic resources required for description as opposed to speculation?
